During today's Mario Kart World Direct, we delved deeper into the exciting new Free Roam mode, which promises a highly interactive multiplayer experience as you explore the expansive world of Mario Kart. This mode revolutionizes the traditional Mario Kart gameplay by allowing players to freely navigate a vast, Forza Horizon-inspired world map, seamlessly transitioning between race tracks and open areas.
Although we had the chance to go hands-on with Mario Kart World last week, it wasn't until today that we got a comprehensive look at what Free Roam mode offers. Unlike previous Mario Kart games where tracks were isolated and only accessible during races, Mario Kart World integrates them into an open world. This means players can drive from one track to another in specific game modes and enjoy the freedom to explore and have fun in the areas connecting them.
In Free Roam mode, when you're not racing, you can embark on a mini-adventure. The world is filled with hidden collectibles like coins and ? panels, though their purpose remains a mystery for now. Scattered P-Switches add to the fun by triggering small challenges, such as collecting blue coins, enhancing your exploration experience.
One of the standout features of Free Roam is the ability to activate Photo Mode at any time, allowing you to capture memorable moments with your racers in various poses and angles. And the fun doesn't stop there—Free Roam isn't limited to solo play. You can join friends in this mode, driving around together, snapping photos, tackling challenges, or simply enjoying each other's company. Free Roam supports up to four players on the same system via split-screen, or up to eight players in total through local wireless play, with two players per system.
