Superman's Krypto Sparks Dog Adoption Searches, Says James Gunn

Krypto the Superdog might just be Superman's scene-stealing co-star, captivating audiences with his mischievous yet lovable antics. This superpowered pup gives as much trouble as he does help to the Man of Steel—could he possibly overshadow even Lex Luthor, Lois Lane, or Superman himself? After watching the movie, my kids only wanted to talk about one character on our way home: Krypto.

Krypto's influence appears even greater than anticipated. Data from dog training app Woofz—reported by The Wrap—shows Google searches for "adopt a dog near me" skyrocketed by 513% following Superman's release last weekend, while "rescue dog adoption near me" saw a 163% increase.

Other related searches also spiked, though more modestly. "Adopt a puppy" rose by 31%, and some fans even tried searching for Krypto’s supposed breed—searches for "adopt a schnauzer" jumped by 299%. (Krypto’s exact breed remains unclear since, well, he's a CGI alien—has nobody asked writer-director James Gunn for confirmation yet?!)

One thing *is* certain: Krypto was inspired by Gunn’s own rescue dog, Ozu. Gunn shared that after adopting the one-year-old Ozu, who had limited human interaction, the pup wreaked havoc—chewing furniture and even nipping at his feet. That’s when inspiration struck: *What if this dog had superpowers?* And so, Krypto—along with Gunn’s vision for Superman—was born.

Responding to the spike in dog adoption searches, Gunn posted on social media: "This film has been full of blessings, but this might be the greatest one yet."
