"Dishonored 2 Receives Unexpected Update 9 Years Post-Launch"

Summary

  • Dishonored 2 unexpectedly received a small update for PC, PlayStation, and Xbox.
  • The patch is quite small and appears to include bug fixes and language updates.
  • Arkane Lyon is currently working on Marvel's Blade.

One of the most highly praised Bethesda games from the Xbox One and PlayStation 4 era, Dishonored 2, has been unexpectedly updated. Released towards the end of 2016, the game introduced a new protagonist, Emily Kaldwin, and captivated players with standout missions like The Clockwork Mansion and A Crack in the Slab, known for their innovative gameplay and detailed environments.

Arkane Lyon, the studio behind Dishonored 2, also developed the acclaimed 2021 game Deathloop. However, its sister studio, Arkane Austin, was unfortunately closed in 2024 alongside other Xbox studios such as Roundhouse Studios, Alpha Dog Games, and Tango Gameworks, although Tango was later revived by Korean publisher Krafton. Arkane Austin had previously worked on the original Dishonored, the 2017 sci-fi game Prey, and the 2023 co-op looter shooter Redfall, which received poor reviews. Fortunately, Arkane Lyon continues to operate and is now focused on developing Marvel's Blade in collaboration with Marvel Games.

Out of the blue, fans noticed a small update for Dishonored 2 across Xbox, PlayStation, and Steam. This patch, weighing in at just 230MB, seems to focus on minor bug fixes and updates to the game's language depots, according to SteamDB. However, on Xbox, the update requires reinstalling the entire 40GB game.

Dishonored 2 Receives a Surprise New Update, but Not a 60 FPS Mode

The exact purpose of this surprise update remains unclear, and many fans are disappointed that it does not include the much-anticipated performance boost to 60 FPS. Unlike other Arkane games that can run at 60 FPS on Xbox Series X and PlayStation 5, Dishonored 2 remains locked at 30 FPS. Even the original Dishonored and the 2017 standalone spinoff, Dishonored: Death of the Outsider, benefit from performance enhancements on these consoles. Some speculate that Arkane Lyon might release a 60 FPS patch for Dishonored 2's tenth anniversary in 2026, though waiting this long for a performance update might not satisfy fans.

While many are eager for a third mainline Dishonored game, its development seems distant, especially following the closure of Arkane Austin. Arkane Lyon is currently dedicated to their upcoming third-person game, Marvel's Blade, which has yet to receive a release date.
