Minecraft's cubic world, while captivating, presents dangers: neutral mobs, monsters, and, in certain game modes, other players. Self-defense relies on crafted shields and weapons. This guide focuses on creating a bow and arrows in Minecraft – essential for ranged combat. (Sword crafting is covered elsewhere.)

What is a Bow in Minecraft?
The Minecraft bow is a ranged weapon, offering a safer way to engage enemies. However, this advantage isn't universal; the Warden, for example, possesses ranged attacks requiring strategic combat. Skeletons, Strays, and Illusioners also wield bows, with Skeletons posing a significant early-game threat.
How to Make a Bow in Minecraft
Crafting a bow requires:
- 3 Strings
- 3 Sticks
Combine these at a crafting table as shown below:
Alternatively, two damaged bows can be repaired at a crafting table, resulting in a bow with durability exceeding the sum of the originals by 5%.
Getting a Bow from a Villager
Fletchers offer bows: Apprentice-level Fletchers sell regular bows (2 emeralds), while Expert-level Fletchers sell enchanted bows (7-21 emeralds).
Getting a Bow as a Trophy
Defeating Skeletons or Strays has a chance (8.5%, increased to 11.5% with a Looting enchantment on your sword) of yielding a bow.
Bow as a Crafting Ingredient
Bows are also used to craft Dispensers. You'll need:
- 1 Bow
- 7 Cobblestones
- 1 Redstone Dust
Arrange them as shown:
Arrows in Minecraft
To craft arrows:
- 1 Flint
- 1 Stick
- 1 Feather
This yields 4 arrows.
Arrows can also be obtained from Skeleton and Stray drops (1-2 arrows, sometimes with a Slowness effect), purchased from Fletchers (16 arrows for 1 emerald), found in chests within structures (Jungle Temples, Bastion Remnants), as rewards for defending villages (Hero of the Village buff), or collected from the world (excluding arrows shot by Skeletons, Illusioners, or bows with Infinity enchantment). In Creative mode, arrows disappear upon impact.
Using a Bow in Minecraft
Equip the bow; arrows only need to be in your inventory. Draw the bowstring (right-click) and release to shoot. Damage increases with draw time (fully drawn: 6 damage, maximum: 11 damage). Arrow distance depends on draw strength and angle. Maximum distance is achieved with a fully drawn bow at a 45-degree upward angle.
To create enhanced arrows:
- 8 Arrows
- Any Lingering Potion
Arrange as shown:
These arrows apply the potion's effect (⅛ duration) on impact. Infinity enchantment doesn't negate the ammo limit for these arrows.
Spectral arrows (Java Edition) illuminate the impact area. Craft them with:
- 1 Arrow
- 4 Glowstone Dust
Remember to maintain your bow's durability and carry sufficient arrows for effective hunting and self-defense.
