Atari's Breakout Beyond Reimagines Classic Brick-Breaker with Sideways Twist

The 1976 classic Breakout receives a vibrant update nearly five decades later. Breakout Beyond reimagines Atari's iconic brick-breaker, preserving the paddle-and-ball core while introducing a unique sideways movement.

Developed by Choice Provisions, known for the BIT.TRIP series, Breakout Beyond features a left-to-right progression. Players aim to shatter bricks, with dynamic lights and effects amplifying as combos build.

Special bricks trigger spectacular effects, from massive explosions to a powerful laser cannon. The game includes 72 levels and an unlockable endless mode with a global online leaderboard. For shared fun, Breakout Beyond offers local two-player co-op.

Initially planned as an exclusive for the Intellivision Amico in 2020, Breakout Beyond was later acquired by Atari for completion.

"We're excited to deliver this gem to our fans," said Ethan Stearns, Atari's senior director of games publishing. "The team saw it as a brilliant concept, keeping Breakout's essence while adding a fresh spin. Breakout Beyond is a stellar addition to the franchise, and we’re eager to see players unleash wild combos."

The Amico, unveiled in 2018 with a planned 2020 launch, has yet to release, facing numerous challenges and delays. Atari acquired Intellivision's branding and rights last year, excluding the Amico console.

Breakout Beyond arrives later this year on PC, PlayStation 4 and 5, Xbox Series X and S, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, and Atari VCS.
