Matajuegos has exciting news for gamers: their surrealist documentary game, Atuel, is set to launch on PC and Android later this year. Eager fans can already pre-register on the game's Steam page, with Google Play expected to follow suit soon.
Originating from an indie cooperative in Argentina, Matajuegos first released Atuel on itch.io in September 2022. The game quickly captured the attention of the gaming community for its innovative blend of documentary storytelling, experimental gameplay, and breathtaking dreamlike visuals.
Atuel's originality didn't go unnoticed; it clinched the 'Innovation in Experience Design Award' at IndieCade 2022, along with numerous other accolades as a groundbreaking documentary game. The game has also been showcased at prestigious events like the Marché du Film at Cannes and the Smithsonian American Art Museum.
Curious about what Atuel offers? Take a peek at the trailer below:
What Do You Do in Atuel, the Documentary Game?
Atuel immerses players in the Atuel River Valley of Argentina, a visually stunning region grappling with the effects of climate change. The game offers a unique experience where players shapeshift into various animals and elements of the ecosystem, effectively becoming part of the landscape.
From soaring through the sky to flowing as the river itself, Atuel provides a dynamic gameplay experience. The narrative is enriched with real-life interviews featuring historians, biologists, geologists, and local residents, who discuss the valley's history, current state, and the looming impact of climate change.
Matajuegos partnered with the international documentary team, The 12.01 Project, to weave these compelling stories into the game. The visuals, inspired by the Cuyo desert, give Atuel an almost otherworldly feel, setting it apart in the gaming landscape.
While waiting for the Android pre-registration to open, gamers can visit the Steam page or the official website for more details. Once launched on mobile platforms, Atuel will feature localization in seven new languages and full controller support.
