Xbox and Nintendo Spurred the Two Scariest Moments of Former PlayStation Exec Shuhei Yoshida's Career

Shuhei Yoshida, former head of Sony Interactive Entertainment's Worldwide Studios, recounts two particularly daunting moments in his PlayStation career, both orchestrated by competitors Nintendo and Xbox.

In a MinnMax interview, Yoshida described the Xbox 360's one-year head start on the PlayStation 3 as "very, very scary," fearing potential customers would be drawn to the next-gen gaming experience offered by Microsoft's console.

However, Yoshida pinpointed Nintendo's announcement of Monster Hunter 4 as a 3DS exclusive as the "biggest shock." This was particularly jarring given Monster Hunter's immense success on the PlayStation Portable, where it boasted two exclusive titles. The surprise was compounded by Nintendo's simultaneous $100 price drop on the 3DS, significantly undercutting the PlayStation Vita.

Monster Hunter 4, a 2013 Nintendo 3DS exclusive, followed by its enhanced version, Ultimate, a year later.
Yoshida's recollection highlights the competitive pressure: "After launch, both Nintendo 3DS and Vita were $250, but they dropped $100," he stated. "And [then they] announced the biggest game... The biggest game on PSP was Monster Hunter. And that game is going to come out on Nintendo 3DS exclusively. I was like, 'Oh no.' That was the biggest shock."

Yoshida's retirement in January, after over three decades with Sony, has opened the door to sharing previously undisclosed insights into the competitive landscape of the gaming industry. He's also shared opinions on Sony's live service strategy and the lack of a Bloodborne sequel or remake.
