Squad Busters is celebrating its first anniversary with the release of its monumental update, version 2.0, set to launch on May 13th. Since its debut in 2024, the game has struggled to achieve the level of popularity that Supercell had hoped for. The question on everyone's mind is: will the 2.0 update turn things around?
This Isn’t Just a Tweak or Two
Squad Busters 2.0 isn't just a minor update; it's practically a reboot. The game is undergoing a comprehensive overhaul, from the mechanics of battles to the way victories are achieved, signaling a major shift in gameplay dynamics.
The most significant change comes with the introduction of Heroes. Players will now select a Hero to lead their squad, with each Hero drawn from existing characters. If your Hero falls in battle, it's game over for your team. This adds a new layer of strategy and importance to each match.
Combat mechanics are also being revamped. Gone are the days of stopping to fight; now, movement and combat are seamlessly integrated, making matches more dynamic, aggressive, and fast-paced. This change aims to inject more excitement into every encounter.
Victory conditions are also being altered. Instead of needing to eliminate all opponents, players now only need to take down the enemy Hero. While some fans are concerned this shift makes Squad Busters feel too similar to Brawl Stars, it's clear Supercell is aiming to streamline and intensify the gameplay experience.
Squad Busters 2.0 Is Dumping a Lot of Old Features
In this update, several game modes are being removed, including Doppelgangers, Double Trouble, Epic Overload, Loot Machines, and Hatchling Herder. Additionally, some old skins and progression systems are being phased out. To ease the transition, Supercell will compensate players with Hero Points and other in-game items.

Supercell's rapid changes to Squad Busters are a clear response to the game's underwhelming reception compared to their other hits like Clash of Clans and Brawl Stars.
With the first anniversary approaching on May 29th, Supercell is making a bold move to rekindle interest in Squad Busters. They're rolling out a series of daily piñata events starting soon, which will include opportunities to unlock a new Hero, Mortis.
