Spider-Man 2 Debuts to 'Mixed' Steam Reviews Amid Serious PC Performance Problems

by Ellie Feb 21,2025

Spider-Man 2's PC port, initially touted for its surprisingly good performance based on its system requirements, has received a mixed reception on Steam. A significant number of users report various technical problems, resulting in a "mixed" user review rating.

Currently, only 55% of Steam reviews are positive. Many players, even those with high-end hardware like RTX 4090 GPUs and the latest drivers, experience frequent crashes. One user reported crashes every five minutes, rendering the game unplayable. Several reviews describe the game's performance as "rough," citing issues such as: loading failures in cutscenes, extremely low frame rates in cutscenes, audio desynchronization, freezing, stuttering, and other performance problems. Many players have requested refunds due to these issues.

A common problem seems to be frequent crashes of the game's graphics controller, even on powerful PCs. The error message often points to outdated drivers, overly demanding in-game settings, GPU overheating, or a game-related error.

PlayFurther complaints include malfunctions in features like DLSS and ray tracing, alongside extended loading times, missing textures, and persistent audio problems. Some players report performance stutters escalating into crashes after extended play sessions, suggesting a possible memory leak.

Nixxes Software, the porting studio, acknowledged the issues on the Steam forums, directing users to their support website for troubleshooting guides. They request users experiencing problems submit logs and crash dumps to expedite problem resolution. The studio also confirmed awareness of a bug affecting photo-op missions, suggesting lowering graphics settings or resolution as a temporary fix if frame rates drop below 20 FPS.
