Nintendo Switch 2 Joy-Con Mouse Theory Is Looking Pretty Good Right About Now

by Christopher Feb 27,2025

The Nintendo Switch 2 reveal this morning lends significant credence to earlier rumors about Joy-Con mouse functionality.

PlayThe reveal trailer showcases detached Joy-Cons placed attachment-side down on a surface, connecting to flat-bottomed connectors. These then move across the surface, mimicking mouse movement on a mousepad. A possible slider pad is visible on one connector, further supporting this theory.

Pre-reveal speculation centered on a sensor inside the Joy-Cons, similar to those in computer mice. While Nintendo hasn't confirmed this feature, its potential applications are numerous. Fans envision uses in traditionally mouse-and-keyboard-friendly games like Civilization, while others anticipate innovative implementations within Nintendo's first-party titles. The possibilities remain open.

Despite the uncertainty surrounding mouse support and a new Joy-Con button, several details about the Switch 2 are confirmed. Officially named the Nintendo Switch 2, it's slated for a 2025 release and will include a new Mario Kart title. Backward compatibility with the original Switch is ensured, with further software announcements expected during an April Direct. Stay tuned for more Switch 2 updates here.
