Despite the lackluster performance of the TV adaptation of Halo, Microsoft remains undeterred in its pursuit of bringing more of its video game franchises to the screen. Phil Spencer, the head of Microsoft Gaming, has confirmed to Variety that fans can anticipate further adaptations in the future. This comes on the heels of the upcoming release of "A Minecraft Movie," a cinematic adaptation of the popular Microsoft-owned game Minecraft, which stars Jack Black and is poised to potentially kickstart a series of sequels if successful.
Microsoft's foray into film and television adaptations is not new. Following the highly successful "Fallout" series on Prime Video, which is already slated for a second season, the company has been actively exploring more opportunities. However, the Halo TV series, despite its high budget, was canceled after two seasons due to poor reception.
Speaking to Variety, Spencer emphasized that Microsoft is continuously learning from its experiences with adaptations like Halo and Fallout. "We’re learning and growing through this process, which is giving us more confidence that we should do more," Spencer stated. He acknowledged that while some projects might not meet expectations, the overall experience is building confidence within the company to pursue further adaptations.
Looking ahead, speculation abounds on which Xbox game could be next in line for an adaptation. In 2022, Netflix announced plans for a live-action film and an animated series based on Gears of War, though updates have been scarce. With Microsoft's acquisition of Activision Blizzard, possibilities include a Call of Duty movie or a renewed effort for a Warcraft adaptation. Jason Schreier's book, "Play Nice: The Rise, Fall, and Future of Blizzard Entertainment," disclosed that previous projects with Netflix for Warcraft, Overwatch, and Diablo had been shelved, sparking curiosity about potential revivals.
On a lighter note, Microsoft's ownership of the Crash Bandicoot franchise opens the door for family-friendly animated content, especially given the success of similar adaptations like Mario and Sonic. Additionally, with the anticipated reboot of Fable in 2026, fans might see a new adaptation of this beloved series. And, despite the Halo TV series' failure, there's always the possibility of a big-budget movie to give the franchise another shot.
Microsoft's competitors, Sony and Nintendo, have made significant strides in this arena. Sony boasts successes with the Uncharted movie, HBO's The Last of Us, and the upcoming second season of Twisted Metal. Sony has also announced adaptations for Helldivers 2, Horizon Zero Dawn, and an anime series for Ghost of Tsushima, alongside a two-season commitment for the God of War TV show. Meanwhile, Nintendo's "The Super Mario Bros. Movie" has become the most successful video game adaptation ever, with a sequel and a live-action Legend of Zelda film in the works.
