Michael J. Fox and Gibson have officially begun the hunt for the legendary guitar played during the Enchantment Under the Sea dance sequence in the classic film Back to the Future.

"We need your help locating the guitar I played in Back to the Future," Fox appealed to fans in a YouTube video supporting the search. "It's either lost in the space-time continuum or collecting dust in some crew member's garage."

The Great Guitar Hunt

Gibson, manufacturers of the Cherry Red ES-345 guitar featured in the 1985 blockbuster, released a vintage "wanted" poster asking: "Have You Seen This Guitar?"

Joining Fox in the search, co-stars Lea Thompson (Lorraine Baines-McFly) and Christopher Lloyd (Dr. Emmett Brown) urged fans to submit leads through a dedicated website or hotline. Even Huey Lewis, whose music features prominently in the film, made a surprise appearance in the announcement video.

This historical quest will be chronicled in Gibson's upcoming documentary titled Lost to the Future.

The Search for Cinema History

"We've been tracking down leads and rumors for years," director Doc Crotzer explained to The Hollywood Reporter. "Given it's been four decades, memories have naturally faded. We didn't have digital paper trails back then, just conflicting stories and persistent rumors as numerous as the people who share them."

Gibson strategically timed this search to mark the film's 40th anniversary, reviving interest in the long-missing instrument.

The Franchise's Future

In related Back to the Future news, screenwriter Bob Gale recently emphasized that the beloved franchise won't receive any sequels, prequels, or spinoffs - despite ongoing fan speculation.

"I don't understand why this keeps coming up," Gale told People magazine. "Do they think repeating it will magically make it happen? The answer remains no - no Back to the Future 4, no prequel, no spinoff. As Bob Zemeckis always said, the trilogy is 'perfect enough' as it stands."
