Hyper Light Breaker, the highly anticipated sequel to the indie hit Hyper Light Drifter, significantly departs from its predecessor's formula. Trading 2D pixel art for a stunning 3D world (without sacrificing its unique visual style), it blends rogue-lite gameplay with extraction mechanics, and crucially, adds multiplayer.
Playing Hyper Light Breaker with friends is a core element of the experience, making many aspects of the game easier and more rewarding. This guide details how to play with friends, and how to use online matchmaking to join random public groups.
How To Play Hyper Light Breaker With Friends
To play Hyper Light Breaker co-op with friends, you'll need to create a private multiplayer room. After spawning in the Cursed Outpost, the game's hub, approach the counter to the left of your commander, Pherus Bit.
Press the Interact button (usually R1 or RB) at the counter to access the Multiplayer menu. Here, you can create a Breaker Team, join one, or check invitations. To play with friends, select "Create Breaker Team."
In the following menu, enable "Password Required" and set a password. Once your private Breaker Team is created, invite up to two friends via your platform's social features (PSN, Xbox, and Steam are supported). The game supports groups of three.
If your friend is online, the invitation will appear in the "Invitations" tab of the Multiplayer menu. Otherwise, they can join using the invitation link.
Your team might also appear in the "Join Breaker Team" menu under the general listing of teams with available slots. If other methods fail, your friend can search this list to join directly.
Once your friend accepts the invite (remember to share the password!), you're ready for some co-op action.
Random Online Matchmaking In Hyper Light Breaker
If you lack friends who own Hyper Light Breaker but still want to play multiplayer, the game offers public groups. You can create your own public group (without a password) or join a random one via matchmaking.
In the Cursed Outpost's Multiplayer menu, select "Join Breaker Team," then scroll to the bottom and choose "Join Random Public Breaker Team."
The game will search for available public teams and assign you to one if found. After a brief load screen, you'll join the host's world.
To leave a multiplayer session, return to the counter in the Cursed Outpost, open the Multiplayer menu, and select the "Disconnect" option (this appears only when in a session). Alternatively, simply quitting the game will also end the session.
