Deltarune Chapter 4: Almost Ready, But Still a Way Off
Toby Fox, the creator of Undertale, recently gave fans a progress update on Deltarune in his latest newsletter. Let's dive into the details.
Chapter 4 Nearing Completion
Fox confirmed that Chapters 3 and 4 of Deltarune are planned for a simultaneous release on PC, Switch, and PS4. While Chapter 4 is nearly finished—all maps are complete and battles are playable—some polishing remains. This includes minor cutscene improvements, battle balancing, visual tweaks, background enhancements, and refining ending sequences for a couple of battles. Despite this, Fox considers Chapter 4 essentially ready, having received positive feedback from playtesters.
The challenge, Fox explains, lies in the multi-platform and multilingual release. With this being their first major paid release since Undertale, the team is prioritizing perfection.
Before launch, several key tasks remain:
- Testing new features
- Finalizing PC and console versions
- Japanese localization
- Thorough bug testing
Chapter 3 development is already complete (as per Fox's February newsletter). Interestingly, while finalizing Chapter 4, some team members have begun preliminary work on Chapter 5, including map creation and bullet pattern design.
The newsletter doesn't offer a release date, but it does tease fans with snippets of Ralsei and Rouxls' dialogue, a character description for Elnina, and a new item, the GingerGuard. While the three-year wait since Chapter 2 has been frustrating for many, the promise of Chapters 3 and 4 being longer than Chapters 1 and 2 combined keeps anticipation high.
Fox is optimistic about a smoother release schedule for future chapters once Chapters 3 and 4 are out.
