by Lillian Dec 09,2025

Following months of speculation and an extensive casting search, DC has officially announced Tom Rhys Harries as the actor set to portray the legendary Batman villain and shapeshifter Clayface in the upcoming standalone DCU film.

DC Studios co-CEO James Gunn confirmed the news by sharing a Deadline article on the social media platform Bluesky. This marks a significant development for the project, which is rapidly taking form as its September 11, 2026, release date approaches.

“After an exceptionally long and thorough search, we are thrilled to welcome Tom Rhys Harries as our Clayface in the DCU,” Gunn stated. “Both Matt Reeves and I were profoundly impressed by his talent, and we're incredibly excited for audiences to experience this film, directed by James Watkins and written by Mike Flanagan.”

This role will mark Harries' debut in the comic book genre. The actor has previously built a notable reputation through films such as The Gentlemen and The Return, as well as short films like Yellowbird and Hireth. Audiences may also recognize him from his television roles in series including White Lines and Suspicion.

The DCU's Clayface movie will be directed by James Watkins (Speak No Evil) from a screenplay by Mike Flanagan (Midnight Mass, The Life of Chuck). With Lynn Harris and The Batman director Matt Reeves also serving as producers, the project boasts a creative team that is sure to excite horror enthusiasts as filming prepares to commence shortly.

While specific plot details are still largely confidential, Gunn and fellow DC Studios co-CEO Peter Safran did offer some hints earlier this year about what Batman fans can anticipate. It has been confirmed that the film will explore Clayface's origin story. Gunn specifically described the project as “pure f***ing horror,” noting that it will incorporate elements of psychological and body horror.

Further details on how Clayface will carve out his unique space in the DCU are expected to be revealed in the coming months. In the meantime, you can explore our comprehensive guide to all upcoming DCU projects. You can also read about the recent challenges Batman has presented for Gunn.
