The Battle of Hulao Gate is a legendary and challenging encounter in Dynasty Warriors: Origins, serving as the climactic stage of Chapter 2. Your primary objective is to defeat Dong Zhuo, but achieving this goal requires strategic planning and persistence.

As you start the mission, focus on capturing the four enemy bases located at the bottom right of the map. After securing two of these bases, a cutscene will trigger, showing a cavalry unit led by Zhang Liao charging towards your position. Continue your conquest of the bases, as you'll naturally encounter and defeat this cavalry. Defeating Zhang Liao will reward you with the twin pike weapon, enhancing your arsenal.
Once all bases are under your control, launch an assault on Hulao Gate. This initiates a fierce battle against Dong Zhuo's forces. Your main task here is to protect Cao Cao until he executes his Grand Tactic, which will weaken the enemy defenses significantly, allowing you to advance further.
Lu Bu Appears
As you push forward, Dong Zhuo will deploy Lu Bu to the frontline. It's crucial to avoid direct confrontation with Lu Bu, as he is overwhelmingly powerful and can easily defeat you. Instead, focus on eliminating lesser enemy officers at the edges of the battlefield to maintain your morale, which Lu Bu's presence will otherwise deplete rapidly.
Eventually, Lu Bu will move towards your main base to attack Yuan Shao. Resist the urge to chase him. Liu Bei's forces will engage Lu Bu, giving you a window to focus on defeating Dong Zhuo. This creates a time-sensitive scenario; you must defeat Dong Zhuo before Liu Bei's forces are overrun, triggering a mission failure.
Go After Dong Zhuo
Once Lu Bu departs, quickly restock on meat buns at your captured bases if needed, then prepare for the final push. While Cao Cao readies his charge, take control of the northern and western bases to gather your forces. With all three squads ready and your health restored, enter the closest commander's circle and charge into battle.
You'll face a massive army and Dong Zhuo's initial Grand Tactic of launching fireballs. Your first task is to destroy the front two catapults. Use Musou Rage if available to break through the enemy lines and clear a path to the catapults. After eliminating the soldiers and officers around the catapults, your troops should be able to destroy them, ending Dong Zhuo's first tactic.
As you advance, Dong Zhuo will deploy another Grand Tactic involving fireballs. This time, you need to defeat one of his officers to stop it. Ascend the right stairs, where you'll encounter the officer, but be prepared for an ambush by Diaochan, who has defected to Dong Zhuo's side. Dueling Diaochan can be challenging due to her quick attacks, but defeating her first will prevent being overwhelmed by both her and the officer.
With the second Grand Tactic neutralized, the path to Dong Zhuo should be clear. Your forces should have sufficient morale to overpower his remaining troops, especially if Dian Wei initiates another Grand Tactic in your favor. At this point, focus on defeating Dong Zhuo directly rather than engaging in a duel, as his forces will be significantly weakened.
