PC gaming is largely synonymous with keyboard and mouse control, especially for genres like first-person shooters and strategy games that benefit from precise aiming and control. However, some PC games are arguably better experienced with a gamepad. Reflex-based action and fast-paced melee combat often lend themselves well to controller input. This is particularly true for franchises that originated on consoles and later transitioned to PC.
While many PC releases offer keyboard and mouse support, several titles released in late 2024 and early 2025 highlight the continued relevance of gamepad control on PC. While many recent high-profile releases like Indiana Jones and the Great Circle, Infinity Nikki, Marvel Rivals, Path of Exile 2, and Delta Force generally perform better with keyboard and mouse, some exceptions exist. For example, Legacy of Kain Soul Reaver 1&2 Remastered, while playable with keyboard and mouse, might offer a slightly smoother experience with a gamepad.
Several upcoming PC game releases show promise for superior gamepad play:
- Freedom Wars Remastered: A PS Vita port reminiscent of Monster Hunter, this title seems ideally suited to controller input.
- Tales of Graces f Remastered: The Tales series consistently shines with gamepad controls, and this remaster is likely no exception.
- Final Fantasy VII Rebirth: Given the similar combat system to its predecessor, which played better with a controller on PC, Rebirth is expected to follow suit.
- Marvel's Spider-Man 2: As a PS5 port, a controller-centric experience is anticipated, though keyboard and mouse will likely be functional.
A notable 2024 Soulslike game is also included in this list (see below).
