Sony's Spider-Man universe isn't quite finished yet. Reports suggest the studio is developing a new film featuring the live-action debut of a major fan-favorite character.
While Marvel dominates the Spider-Man cinematic landscape, Sony is reportedly forging ahead with its own project. Rumors point to a new Spider-Man movie introducing a beloved character to the live-action world.
Concurrent with Marvel's production of a fourth Spider-Man film, Sony is pursuing a different path. Industry insider Jeff Sneider, on The Hot Mic podcast, revealed Sony is casting an actor to portray Miles Morales. Whether Miles will headline his own film or appear in a related project remains uncertain, but the news is exciting for fans.
Miles Morales first appeared in Sony's acclaimed animated Spider-Man films, voiced by Shameik Moore. The character's popularity, coupled with the animated films' success, makes a live-action adaptation almost inevitable. Producer Amy Pascal previously confirmed Sony's interest, and this casting search indicates those plans are advancing. While a solo Miles Morales film is possible, inclusion in another Sony Spider-Man Universe film, perhaps a currently unannounced project or even the rumored Spider-Gwen movie, seems more likely. Sneider didn't name potential actors, but fan speculation centers on Moore (due to his voice work and expressed interest) and Hailee Steinfeld (who voiced Gwen Stacy in the animated films and also expressed interest).
Sony's Spider-Man films have been successful, unlike other entries in its Spider-Man Universe. Madame Web and Morbius underperformed at the box office. However, a live-action Spider-Verse film, especially one focusing on Miles, could revitalize the franchise. Sony's animated success demonstrates their capabilities, but concerns remain about their live-action track record. Some fans worry about the potential for mischaracterization and prefer Marvel's handling of the character. Ultimately, success hinges on Sony assembling the right creative team to do justice to Miles Morales. The wait is on to see how Sony proceeds and whether they can deliver a film meeting fan expectations.
