Live-Action Street Fighter Movie Finds a New Director

by Leo Mar 24,2025

A new Street Fighter movie has chosen its director, and it's none other than Kitao Sakurai, known for his work on the absurdist comedy show, *The Eric Andre Show*. According to *The Hollywood Reporter*, Sakurai will helm the upcoming film adaptation of *Street Fighter* for Legendary Entertainment. Capcom is said to be deeply involved in the project, which already has a release date set for March 20, 2026.

This marks another cinematic venture for the iconic fighting game series, following the memorable 1994 film that featured Jean-Claude Van Damme as Guile, Ming-Na Wen as Chun-Li, and the late Raul Julia as M. Bison. While it may not have been critically acclaimed at the time, it remains a cult classic among fans.

Details about the casting have yet to be revealed, but fans can likely anticipate seeing their favorite Street Fighter characters brought to life on the big screen. Initially, the project was set to be directed by Danny and Michael Philippou, known for their work on *Talk to Me*, but they left the project last summer. Sakurai's involvement suggests that Legendary might be steering the film towards a more absurdist tone, which could be a thrilling direction, especially for fans who appreciate the game's more whimsical elements.

While we wait for more news on the movie, fans can dive into the latest installment of the franchise, *Street Fighter 6*, which recently introduced Mai Shiranui as a new fighter. For more insights, check out our comprehensive review of *Street Fighter 6* [ttpp].
