DCU's 'Authority' Film Delayed: Gunn Cites Creative Challenges

by Peyton Mar 13,2025

DC Studios co-chief James Gunn recently revealed that the upcoming film adaptation of The Authority has been moved to the back burner. This surprising announcement comes two years after the project was initially unveiled as part of the DC Universe's Chapter 1: Gods and Monsters reboot. Initially touted as a "big movie," The Authority, featuring the brutally effective superhero team from the WildStorm Universe, appears to have encountered significant hurdles.

Gunn cited the project's complexity and the success of Amazon's The Boys as contributing factors to the delay. He explained that adapting The Authority in a landscape already shaped by similar, successful properties presented unique challenges. The shifting overall narrative of the DCU and the desire to integrate already established characters into the story further complicated the process. As a result, the film is currently on hold.

It's worth noting that while The Authority is delayed, Angela Spica, also known as The Engineer, a powerful member of the team, is slated to appear in the upcoming Superman film. The Engineer's abilities, including self-duplication, technopathy, genius-level intellect, and radio-induced telepathy, make her a formidable addition to the DCU. Other Chapter 1: Gods and Monsters projects have also faced challenges. Gunn mentioned setbacks for Waller, a spinoff of Peacemaker. However, he expressed confidence in the progress of Booster Gold and Paradise Lost, with the latter's pilot currently in the writing stage.

Regarding Swamp Thing, DC Studios is prepared to wait for director James Mangold's availability. While acknowledging Mangold's commitment to other projects, Gunn and Safran emphasized that Swamp Thing isn't crucial to the overarching DCU narrative.
