Capcom Updates ‘Resident Evil 4′, ‘Resident Evil Village’, and ‘Resident Evil 7’ on iOS With Online DRM

TouchArcade Rating: While updates for premium mobile ports often improve optimization or compatibility, Capcom's recent update to Resident Evil 7 biohazard, Resident Evil 4 Remake, and Resident Evil Village on iOS and iPadOS introduces an unwelcome change: mandatory online DRM.

This update requires an internet connection to verify your purchase history upon launching the games. The process adds a few seconds of loading time before accessing your save, but more critically, renders the games completely unplayable offline. Prior to this update, all three titles functioned perfectly offline. This forced online check is a significant drawback, negatively impacting the user experience and removing a key feature – offline playability – from already purchased titles.

Pre-update testing confirmed offline functionality. Post-update, an alert (or similar) appears, and selecting "no" closes the application. While some may not find this problematic, the addition of this persistent online DRM to paid games is concerning. Ideally, Capcom would implement a less intrusive purchase verification method, perhaps checking less frequently. This update unfortunately diminishes the appeal of Capcom's premium mobile ports.

If you haven't purchased these games yet, free trials are available. You can find Resident Evil 7 biohazard on iOS, iPadOS, and macOS here. Resident Evil 4 Remake is available on the App Store here, and Resident Evil Village here. Read my reviews here, here, and here.
