Larian Studios, creators of the 2023 Game of the Year, Baldur's Gate 3, have revealed details about a shelved project: a Baldur's Gate sequel.
A Playable Baldur's Gate Follow-Up Was Abandoned
Larian CEO Swen Vincke confirmed in a PC Gamer interview that a follow-up to BG3, potentially Baldur's Gate 4, was in development and reached a playable stage. However, the team decided against further development. While acknowledging the potential appeal to fans, Vincke cited the team's weariness after years of working within the Dungeons & Dragons universe and the prospect of extensive further development as reasons for the decision. The team felt the need to pursue original ideas.
High Morale Following the Decision
The decision to abandon BG4 and a planned BG3 expansion has reportedly boosted team morale. Vincke stated that the team feels liberated and excited to work on new projects. Larian plans to release a final major patch for BG3 in Fall 2024, including mod support, cross-play, and new endings, before moving on to their undisclosed next projects.
Future Projects: Beyond Divinity: Original Sin 3
While a new Divinity game has been hinted at previously, Vincke clarified that it won't be Divinity: Original Sin 3, suggesting a different direction for the series. The focus now is on two new, unannounced projects, which Vincke promises will be the studio's best yet.
