Devarattam, an ancient and vibrant folk dance rooted in the cultural soil of Tamil Nadu, is a living tradition preserved and performed primarily by the Rajakambalathu Nayakkar community—both in ancient times and today. This dynamic art form is built on a foundation of 32 core dance steps, with an additional 40 variations derived from these basics, offering rich diversity while maintaining structural integrity.
In traditional performances, Devarattam dancers hold a colorful kerchief in each hand, wear salangai (musical anklets) on both feet, and move rhythmically to the powerful beats of the Deva Thunthumi, a traditional percussion instrument that drives the energy of the dance.
This app—Digital Revolution of Devarattam—is proudly created to preserve, promote, and digitally showcase this treasured art form and its esteemed awardees. It serves as a comprehensive resource detailing the history, steps, and significance of Devarattam, along with profiles of those honored for their exceptional contributions.
We proudly dedicate this app to the following luminaries who have elevated Devarattam through their service and artistry:
- Kalaimamani Mr. M. Kumararaman, retired teacher and cultural icon
- Kalaimamani Mr. M. Kannan Kumar
- Kalaimamani Ustad Bismillah Khan Yuva Puraskar Awardee Mr. K. Nellai Manikandan of Zamin Kodangipatti
