EDR Scanning Tool & Accident Report PDFs for Crash Scene Investigators
INVESTIGATING A VEHICLE CRASH
The CrashScan app, used with the OBDLink MX+ Bluetooth adapter, scans a vehicle's electronic control modules, including the Event Data Recorder (EDR) or "blackbox" when supported. It helps investigators identify, extract, and analyze stored data from prior incidents. This information can validate auto insurance claims and serve as a key indicator for determining liability or identifying potentially fraudulent claims.
VEHICLE COMPATIBILITY
(Event Data Recorder & Complete Diagnostic System Scan)

DETAILED ACCIDENT REPORTS
A successful "CrashScan" provides a report detailing impact severity, direction (front, rear, side), and contextual analysis, including:
- Accident severity classification: minor, moderate, or severe.
- Details on EDR activation thresholds.
- 5.0 seconds of pre-crash data: vehicle speed, brake and accelerator pedal application, and steering input.
- Occupant count and seatbelt usage status.
- An estimated repair cost (in monetary value).
- Indication of potential structural damage.
- Injury risk assessments (e.g., whiplash, potential injury duration).
- Contextual comparison to g-forces experienced in daily activities.
*Injury risk algorithms utilize recorded acceleration data, scientific literature, and databases like the National Automotive Sampling System (NASS).

PRIVACY LAW STATUS (EDR DATA)
Canada: No specific legislation; EDR data is generally considered diagnostic and non-private. However, insurers typically seek consent as a standard practice.
United States: The federal Driver Privacy Act of 2015 (enacted December 2015) restricts EDR data access and establishes that the data belongs to the vehicle's owner or lessee. Seventeen states have additional statutes governing EDRs and privacy: Arkansas, California, Colorado, Connecticut, Delaware, Maine, Montana, Nevada, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, North Dakota, Oregon, Texas, Utah, Virginia, and Washington. These laws generally require vehicle owner or policyholder consent for data download, with specific
exceptions.
